Our Palermo is a Fedora made from Panama Fine. The material that becomes the famous Panama goes through several stages: it is a weave of "paja toquilla" strands, a straw obtained from the leaves of Carludovica palmata, a plant native to Central and South America. These straw strands are worked entirely by hand, an important part of Ecuador's cultural heritage: these traditional techniques have been recognised by UNESCO as Heritage of Humanity.

The craftsmanship, carried out exclusively by hand for every grade of weave and not only the finest, is truly remarkable and meticulous. Lower-grade Panamas, with a less fine and less dense weave, such as Panama Brisa (grade 3), are also an excellent choice for those who want a classic summer Panama at a more accessible price.

The step that follows weaving is blocking. Steam and the skilled hands of our Salento artisans are the essential elements of this process. At this stage the hat is given its desired shape with steam and pressing, carried out exclusively by hand on wooden blocks.

Depending on the type and fineness of the weave, Panama takes on different names and qualities: the finest can take up to eight months of handwork by local artisans.

The grade 20 of our Palermo is already a very fine weave, obtained by braiding the strands two by two. This hat has the classic Fedora crown and a small brim. It is finished with a grosgrain and cotton hatband in bauxite red and wine.
