Description

Our Karen is a sophisticated hat, it is modern but with a spirit that looks to the past. It is a real touch of fantasy and elegance for your look. Its 'Drop' or crown hat shape is the iconic Doria shape. The peculiarity of this shape is that, once worn, the hat is very sporty but at the same time elegant. Typically American, born in the first two decades of the 1900s, it is an elaboration of the more classic shapes and is also the shape of the hat worn by Indiana Jones. This shape was renewed in the 1960s to be specific for men by shortening the brim, or for women by widening it. It was adopted from those years in 'Doria Maison' as the basis for its informal and playful style.

It is made of Panama Brisa, which is a weave of 'paja-toquilla' threads, traditionally developed in Ecuador and obtained from the leaves of the 'Carludovica palmata', a particular type of palm tree. The threads are initially dyed in two different colours chosen by our style office, in this case wheat and bauxite, and are then woven by the skilled hands of artisans to create a two-tone star pattern that makes this hat truly unique.

The workmanship of Karen is highly artisanal, in fact it is made with the sole aid of water vapour and heat, pulling it by hand over wooden forms and is handled with care to maintain the traditional elasticity of the panama fibres. In this version, the belt is in a classic grosgrain but has a special elongated and asymmetrical bow that gives the garment additional character.

Panama Hat: History

The material used for this hat is Panama and has an incredible history. It is woven from threads of "paja-toquilla", a straw made from the leaves of the Carludovica palmata plant, typical of tropical America. These threads are collected in the towns of Montecristi and Jipijapa by artisans scattered in small villages and then sold as plaits in the city of Cuenca.

The tenderest shoots of the plant are washed, boiled, dried in the sun and then left to rest in the night breeze. This process produces the natural colour typical of Panama. The final step is to dye the straw in baths of natural tones, allowing the chapel to have the desired colour.

Panama's craftsmanship is completely handmade and is an important part of Ecuador's cultural heritage. Its ancient production techniques were recognised in 2012 as a UNESCO Intangible World Heritage Site. Depending on the type and degree of weaving given to the straw, Panama takes on different names and qualities. The finest quality can involve up to eight months of manual labour by local weavers.
